HINDU CAMP

“HUM HINDU HAI…YOUTHS ATTENDING FIRST HINDU CAMP IN CANADA”

On August 2nd-8th the first Hindu camp in Canada took place at Camp Everton. The youths attending this camp learned more about Hinduism, met new people and some also became more religious and spiritual.

Throughout the week, they did many things from swimming to a big bonfire. Even though the youths had to wake up earlier then usual and face the mornings’ cold, they didn’t want to leave this motivating camp. The last night of the camp, there was a big talent show with the kids. There was dancing, singing, jokes and acting.

“I learned a lot from Pundit Munelal, Tara Ramphal and all the other speakers,” says Aimee Balkissoon one the many youths attending this camp. “When I heard that there is going to be another camp next year, I knew I would definitely go.”

Pundit Munelal was the officiating pundit for this camp. He did many workshops with the kids. Tara Ramphal, Miss Diwali Canada 2004, also came to talk about self-esteem and self-confidence.

There was also an essay writing competition open to all the youths in the camp. There were 2 age groups; 10 and under and 11 and up. Justin Jagdeo won first place in the younger age group and Jonathan Ramjattan and Stacey Kelawan tied first in the older age group.

For most of the youths, this was a really fun experience and really made a big difference in their lives.
