 ESSENTIALS OF HINDUISM

 

1. TEN COMMANDMENTS

 

    1) Yam (Purity) - truthfulness, non-stealing, forgiving, etc.

 

    2) Niyama - religious life

 

    3) Asanas (postures)

 

    4) Pranayama - breath control

 

    5) Karma yoga - selfless service

 

    6) Jyaana yoga - learning religion

 

    7) Dhyana (meditation)

 

    8) Bhakti (devotion)

 

    9) Dharana and

 

    10) Samadhi - fixing and contemplation of God.

 

 

2. Studying of Holy Books - Vedas, Mahabharat, Bhagwat Gita, Ramayan Upanishads.

 

3. Understanding of certain basic ways and moods of life; e.g

 

    a) four stages of life ; Brahmehari, Grihasta, Vanaprasta and Sanyaasi.

   

    b) Three moods of the human mind - Sattwie (purity), Rajasie (passion), and Tamasie (inertia, dull)

 

4. Absolute State (or Brahman) - of selflessness, or attaining oneness with God.

 

5. Law of Karma and Reincarnation.

 

6. Various Yogas - Karma, Jyaana, Bhakti, Dhyana and Raja Yogas.

 

 

Social conduct for fostering a Religious Life:-

 

  • Missionary work for fostering Hinduism,

  • Social Welfare work in communities - goodwill to all,

  • Propagation of teachings of great saints and swamis,

  • Fostering Religion, Education, Culture, Recreation, and High moral standards,
